What a Sick Tree’s Root Zone Actually Looks Like

When a tree starts looking unhealthy, most people look up.

They check the leaves for discoloration, scan the branches for dieback, or inspect the trunk for cracks and cavities.

But sometimes, the most revealing clues are under your feet.

A tree’s root zone is responsible for much more than holding the tree in place. Roots take up water and nutrients, store energy, and absorb the oxygen trees need to function. 

When conditions around those roots deteriorate, problems can eventually show up throughout the tree. That’s why it’s important to examine the soil around the base of your tree periodically, as it offers clues to the tree’s overall health. 

First, What Should a Healthy Root Zone Look Like?

When examining your tree’s root system, start where the trunk meets the ground.

A healthy tree typically widens naturally at its base. This area is called the root flare or root collar. Instead of disappearing into the soil like a telephone pole, the trunk should gradually broaden as the major structural roots extend outward.

The surrounding soil should allow both water and air to reach the roots. This is critical, and a big part of the reason that the fine absorbing roots grow relatively close to the soil surface — you may even see visible surface roots at times.

Ultimately, you just want to ensure your tree’s root zone has enough space, oxygen, water, and healthy soil structure for its roots to function.

So, what does it look like when those conditions aren’t quite right? 

1. The Trunk Goes Straight into the Ground

If the root flare isn’t visible, the tree may have been planted too deeply, or soil or mulch may have accumulated around the trunk over time.

That extra material can reduce oxygen availability to the roots, while excessive mulch against the trunk can hold moisture and encourage decay or problematic root growth.

A buried root collar can also hide another problem: stem-girdling roots. These roots grow around or against the trunk instead of radiating away from it. As the roots and trunk enlarge, they can compress tissues that transport water and nutrients through the tree.

Sometimes a girdling root is visible at the surface. Other times, it remains hidden beneath the soil.

If the root flare has disappeared, don’t start digging aggressively with a shovel. An arborist can excavate the root collar using specialized, air-powered tools to carefully remove excess soil and inspect the root system while minimizing damage to important roots.

2. The Soil Is Hard, Bare, or Heavily Traveled

Think about what happens beneath a tree throughout the year.

People walk across the lawn. Mowers and other equipment travel over the same areas again and again. Cars may occasionally park there, and construction crews may cross the property with heavy machinery.

All of that pressure can compact the soil.

Healthy soil contains pore spaces that allow water and oxygen to reach the roots. Compaction reduces those spaces, limiting water infiltration and oxygen availability while making it harder for new roots to grow.

Compacted areas often show clues at ground level, including: 

  • Hard, dense soil that is difficult to penetrate
  • Bare areas where grass or other plants struggle to grow
  • Standing water or increased runoff after rain
  • A well-worn path beneath the canopy

The tree may eventually respond with reduced growth, smaller leaves, thinning foliage, or branch dieback.

Depending on the tree, soil conditions, and extent of the problem, treatments such as soil aeration or vertical mulching may help improve the root environment.

3. Water Sits Around the Tree After the Rest of the Yard Dries

Trees need water, but their roots also need oxygen.

If puddles regularly linger around a tree long after rainfall has stopped, the site may have drainage problems. Heavy or compacted soils can make the issue worse by slowing water movement through the root zone.

When soil remains saturated for extended periods, roots can be deprived of oxygen. Some tree species tolerate wet soils better than others, but prolonged saturation can stress trees that aren’t adapted to those conditions.

Watch how water behaves around your tree after a significant rain. One wet afternoon is not necessarily cause for concern. Repeated standing water deserves a closer look, especially if the canopy is thinning, leaves are yellowing, or branches are beginning to die back.

4. There’s a Mulch Volcano Around the Trunk

Mulch can be one of the best things you put around a tree, but you have to apply it correctly.

A proper mulch layer helps conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, reduce competition from turf, and protect the tree from lawn equipment. When mulching around a tree, spread it outward across the root zone rather than piling it against the trunk.

The familiar “mulch volcano” can bury the root flare, hold moisture against the lower trunk, and interfere with air and water movement through the soil. It can also encourage roots to grow into the mulch rather than outward into the surrounding soil.

Think wide and shallow rather than tall and deep, with space between the mulch and the trunk.

If your tree has spent years buried under successive layers of mulch, removing the excess may not reveal everything that has happened underneath. The root collar may need to be professionally evaluated for girdling roots, decay, or other damage.

5. Large Roots Have Been Cut, Crushed, or Disturbed

Sometimes the cause of root stress isn’t hidden at all. For example, it’s important to look for recent changes around the tree.

Was a trench dug for a utility line? Did you install a patio, driveway, fence, or new landscaping? Has construction equipment traveled beneath the canopy?

Tree roots extend farther from the trunk than many homeowners realize, so work that seems comfortably located some distance from the tree can still affect its root system.

Cutting or damaging significant roots can reduce the tree’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. Depending on which roots are affected and how severely, root loss can also compromise structural stability.

Construction-related root damage doesn’t always produce an immediate response. A tree may continue looking relatively normal before decline becomes obvious later.

That makes the history of the site an important diagnostic clue. If a previously healthy tree begins declining after work nearby, tell your arborist what changed, even if it happened months or years ago.

6. The Grade Around the Tree Has Changed

Roots don’t have to be cut to be damaged during a landscaping or construction project.

Sometimes they simply get buried.

Adding topsoil, fill dirt, or other material over an established root system changes the environment in which those roots developed. Even when the material looks like good soil, increasing its depth can reduce oxygen movement into the root zone.

Removing soil can cause problems, too, by exposing, injuring, or severing roots.

Changes in grade can be easy to miss, especially if you weren’t the one who made them. Around the tree, you might notice: 

  • A retaining wall or raised planting bed near the tree
  • Fresh soil added around the tree
  • A trunk that appears unusually buried
  • Roots exposed after grading or erosion

If the grade has changed around an established tree, avoid trying to correct it by moving large amounts of soil yourself. Many tree roots grow close to the surface, and additional digging can cause more damage.

7. Mushrooms or Conks Are Growing at the Base

A mushroom near a tree isn’t automatically bad news. Many fungi live on decaying organic material without harming living trees.

But mushrooms growing at the base of a tree deserve attention, as do brackets or conks growing from the trunk, root flare, or major roots. Some wood-decay fungi affect tree roots or the lower trunk, so growth in these areas may indicate decay beneath the surface.

Don’t pull the mushroom off and assume the problem is gone. What you see above ground is only the fruiting structure of the fungus.

Instead, photograph it if possible and have the tree evaluated, particularly if you also notice cavities, a thinning crown, dead branches, or changes in the tree’s stability.

8. The Tree Is Leaning and the Soil Is Lifting

A tree that has always leaned isn’t necessarily unstable, but a new or increasing lean deserves attention.

Look closely at the ground around the tree. Lifting or cracking soil can indicate movement within the root plate. After a storm, you might also notice newly exposed roots, gaps around the base, or soil that appears to have heaved upward.

These can be signs of a serious structural problem, so keep people away from the area and arrange for a professional tree risk evaluation, especially if the tree could strike a house, driveway, road, or other occupied area.

Sometimes the Root Zone Looks Normal

This is the frustrating part.

A tree can have significant root problems even when the ground beneath it looks completely ordinary. Because roots are largely hidden, trouble below ground may first become noticeable in the canopy.

Signs that a tree is struggling can include:

  • Thinning foliage or smaller-than-normal leaves
  • Yellowing or premature fall color
  • Dead branches or reduced growth
  • Wilting or leaf scorch during hot weather
  • Sprouts developing near the base

None of these symptoms points exclusively to a root problem. Insects, diseases, drought, and other stressors can cause similar changes.

What an Arborist Can See That You Can’t

Evaluating soil and root health doesn’t always mean excavating the entire area around a tree.

An ISA-certified arborist considers the whole picture, including the tree’s condition, root flare, soil, drainage, visible symptoms, and what’s happened around it over time.

When more information is needed, tools such as root collar excavation can expose important roots for closer examination. Soil testing and other diagnostic methods may also help identify the problem.

Treatment depends on the cause. It might involve addressing compaction, correcting a buried root collar or girdling roots, improving soil conditions, adjusting irrigation, or protecting the root zone from further disturbance.

The important thing is not to treat every declining tree the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Root Health

Root problems aren’t always easy to spot, and many warning signs can have more than one cause. Here are answers to some common questions about tree root health.

How can you tell if a tree has unhealthy roots?

Look for a buried root flare, girdling roots, compacted or waterlogged soil, fungal growth near the base, or lifting soil. Thinning foliage and branch dieback can also signal trouble, but an arborist can determine whether the roots are actually the cause.

How far does a tree’s root zone extend?

Roots can extend well beyond a tree’s canopy, with many fine roots growing relatively close to the soil surface. That’s why digging, paving, compaction, or construction away from the trunk can still affect the root system.

Is it normal for tree roots to show above the ground? 

Some visible surface roots can be normal, especially as trees mature. However, exposed roots can also result from erosion or changing soil conditions.

What does root rot look like around a tree?

Root rot may not be visible above ground. Mushrooms near the trunk or major roots, canopy decline, branch dieback, or changes around the root flare can be warning signs, but these symptoms don’t confirm root rot on their own.

Can a tree recover from root damage?

Sometimes. Recovery depends on the type and extent of the damage, the tree’s overall condition, and whether the cause can be corrected. An arborist can determine whether treatment is likely to help.
