Seasonal Tree Care
The Homeowner’s Guide to Fall Tree Health Care in Northern Virginia
Fall has a way of making us notice our trees again. Maples flash red and orange, leaves scatter across the lawn, and that oak outside
Keeping your trees healthy and safe takes more than the occasional pruning. It requires a well-rounded approach that addresses every aspect of their biology, structure, and long-term health. That’s exactly what you get working with the professionals at RTEC Treecare.
Some tree companies in the McLean area only cover the basics. RTEC Treecare takes a fuller approach, making sure your trees get the care they need from roots to trunk to canopy, staying safe, healthy, and looking great for years to come.
Picking up a chainsaw and slapping a tree care label on your truck doesn’t take much. But legitimate, science-backed tree care is a completely different story. It requires solid education, hands-on experience, the right equipment, and a depth of expertise that most companies simply can’t deliver.
If you’re a homeowner or property manager in McLean, VA, you’ve never had to settle for less. RTEC Treecare has been delivering award-winning tree care services throughout the McLean, VA area for over 30 years. We know trees inside and out, and we understand the specific environmental conditions of the Mid-Atlantic region that directly shape tree health.

RTEC Treecare is based at 2828 Mary St in Merrifield, roughly six miles from McLean by way of Route 123 or the Beltway, well inside our core service area. McLean's larger properties take time to work, and a repeating relationship, storm response, a return for a second phase, a scheduled prune, is easier when the crew is close.
That proximity is part of doing the job properly on estate-scale lots, where a removal or a large pruning job is often more than a single day's work.
McLean is a large, established community of about 50,773 residents across nearly 25 square miles of Fairfax County, defined by substantial lots and heavy mature landscaping. Stream valleys thread through it, Scott Run, Pimmit Run, Dead Run and Turkey Run all run toward the Potomac, and many properties back onto that kind of wooded, low-lying ground.
Those conditions grow big trees, and big trees on lived-in property are where the real tree work is.
The canopy here runs to large hardwoods, with beech, red maple, tulip poplar and oak among the most common trees in this part of Fairfax County. Size is the whole story on a McLean lot. A mature tulip poplar or oak carries long lateral limbs a great distance from the trunk, and those limbs gain weight every year, so when a summer storm or a wet snow loads them, the failures come down on roofs, cars and the landscaping below. The most valuable work we do here is preventive: reducing end weight on the heaviest limbs, clearing deadwood over the areas people use, and cabling unions worth preserving, so a large tree stays standing safely rather than shedding a limb in the next storm.
Aging oaks deserve particular attention. Mature oaks across Northern Virginia are prone to a slow, stress-driven decline, driven by age, drought and root disturbance rather than by any single disease, and a thinning oak over a McLean house is worth looking at before it becomes a hazard. It is worth saying plainly that this is oak decline, not oak wilt, which has no confirmed cases in Virginia.
Removals on these properties are shaped by what sits beneath the tree. With high-value homes, pools and mature plantings underneath, dropping a tree whole is rarely the plan. Crews rig it down in pieces or bring a crane to lift sections out cleanly, protecting what is below. The stream-valley lots add one more factor: a tree on moist, sloping ground near Scott Run or Pimmit Run can be losing its footing even while its canopy looks sound, so the base and the root plate get as much attention as the crown. And where a McLean property is being renovated or added onto, the mature trees worth keeping need their root zones protected before grading starts, because construction damage does not show as a dying canopy until a year or two later, long after the equipment has gone.
On large, carefully kept McLean properties there is nowhere to hide a careless job. We treat the trees as the significant part of the property they are, and we would rather be the company invited back than the one that damaged a lawn or a garden bed getting a tree down.
