FIFTEEN MILES AND ONE BRIDGE

We work out of 2828 Mary St in Falls Church. Potomac is about 15 miles from us, up the Beltway across the American Legion Bridge and out River Road, roughly 23 minutes when the crossing cooperates.

On two acre properties, being close is not a convenience, it's how the work gets planned properly. Estate assessments take time on the ground. Access has to be walked before equipment gets committed. And when a storm puts a limb across a long private drive, the crew coming out isn't starting from an hour away.

TWO ACRE MINIMUMS, AND WHAT THEY DO TO A TREE

Edward Offutt settled here in 1714 on a 600 acre grant, and for most of the next two centuries this was Offutts Crossroads. It became Potomac in 1881. Real suburbanization arrived in the 1950s.

What kept Potomac from turning into everywhere else is zoning. Much of the area sits in Montgomery County's RE-2 district, which sets a two acre minimum lot with 150 feet of width at the front building line, written specifically to provide large lot residential areas. Roughly three quarters of the housing here is single family detached.

That single rule shaped the entire canopy. A tree with two acres around it doesn't have to compete for light. It grows the way a tree grows in a field: short, thick trunk, and an enormous spreading crown with long lateral limbs reaching out in every direction.

And there's more of it than there used to be. Forest cover across the Potomac Subregion went from about 11,000 acres in 2002 to 13,573 acres in 2023, a gain of more than 2,500 acres.

The river edge is a different world again. The Potomac Gorge, a 1,900 acre natural area where the river drops nearly 80 feet in under a mile, supports more than 60 rare plants and animals, and the C&O Canal runs the length of it past Great Falls Tavern.

OPEN-GROWN TREES FAIL DIFFERENTLY

A wide, open-grown specimen is the tree everybody wants and the tree that costs the most when it goes wrong.

Those long lateral limbs are cantilevers. They carry a great deal of weight a long way from the trunk, and they accumulate more of it every year. When one fails, it fails at the union rather than snapping in the middle, and it takes a large piece of the crown with it. That's the classic Potomac summer storm call.

The same shape creates the second problem. Wide crowns mean wide root plates, and on a two acre lot those roots run under drives, patios, pool decking and drainfields. Work done near a mature tree, even work that seems well clear of it, routinely cuts roots that were holding the thing up.

Preventive work on trees like these is genuinely worth it, because the alternative is expensive. Reducing end weight on the heaviest laterals, cabling unions worth preserving, and clearing deadwood over the areas people actually use will keep a specimen tree standing for decades.

It's also worth knowing where the property line falls. A tree in your yard and a tree in the public right of way in front of it are two entirely different legal situations in Maryland, and the difference is not intuitive.

NEIGHBORS TALK ON ROADS LIKE THESE

Our crews are through Potomac regularly and drive past their own work going to the next job. On properties where a single tree can be a defining feature of the place, there's no hiding a bad cut or a rutted lawn. We'd rather earn the next call from the person who watched us work on this one.

Manuella Hancock
I have used RTEC for a number of tree-related projects, including annual care, trimming, removal and planting. I have found them to be incredibly thorough, honest and responsive. I worked with Ben Gotch on the initial quote and proposal, and he is one of the nicest men I've ever met. He truly knows his trees, and he was trustworthy and informative. The crews each time were polite, careful, and cleaned up thoroughly. I could not recommend them more highly.
