RTEC Treecare runs out of 2828 Mary St in Falls Church, about 13 miles from Great Falls by way of Route 7. Call it a little over twenty minutes without traffic.
On properties like the ones here, that matters more than usual. Estate work takes planning, and planning takes site visits. Being close means an arborist can walk several acres with you properly instead of rushing it, come back when the ground dries out, and get a crew here fast when a storm drops something across a private drive.
Before it took the name of the falls in 1955, this village went by Forestville. That was never official, but it stuck for a reason, and colonial farm settlements had been forming in the area since the late 1700s.
The name still describes the place. Roughly 16,000 people live across 25 square miles here, which works out to about 630 people per square mile. For comparison, Reston runs more than 4,100. Great Falls is one of the least dense communities in Fairfax County, and it stayed that way on purpose. The county's own plan for the Riverfront sector holds development to no more than one home per five acres, and the surrounding sectors are written to maintain very low density through large lot residential development.
Difficult Run and Leesburg Pike form the southern edge of the community, and Great Falls Park sits on the river side with 800 acres, most of it forested. Over 150 bird species have been recorded there across the year, which is a decent shorthand for how intact that woodland still is and what the private properties backing onto it are connected to.
Three things come up over and over on Great Falls properties, and none of them are what people expect.
The first is what's under the lawn. Many homes here are on private wells and septic drainfields rather than public water and sewer. A drainfield changes where a crane or a bucket truck can set up, changes how we approach stump grinding, and gives roots something to find. Knowing where your field and reserve area sit before work starts prevents an expensive surprise.
The second is oak decline. Fairfax County documents it in red, white, chestnut and black oak, driven by a stack of stresses rather than one pathogen: age, drought, pests, poor care. It shows up as canopy thinning from the top, sprouts appearing on the trunk and limbs, and leaves yellowing early. There is no cure. Watering through drought, mulching correctly at three inches and kept off the trunk, and avoiding trunk wounds are what actually extend a mature oak's life.
The third is deer, and it's the quiet one. A healthy woodland supports 15 to 20 deer per square mile. Fairfax County estimates many sites carry 40 to 100. At that pressure, seedlings and saplings get browsed off before they can become trees. In much of the county there is little to no natural regeneration happening at all. So when a mature oak comes off a Great Falls property, nothing is growing up to take its place unless somebody plants it and protects it.
