Seasonal Tree Care
The Homeowner’s Guide to Fall Tree Health Care in Northern Virginia
Fall has a way of making us notice our trees again. Maples flash red and orange, leaves scatter across the lawn, and that oak outside
Keeping your trees vibrant and safe takes more than the occasional pruning — it requires a well-rounded approach that addresses every aspect of their biology, structure, and long-term health. That’s exactly what you get when you work with the professionals at RTEC Treecare.
Not every tree company in Merrifield, VA looks at the whole picture — but that’s exactly what we do. Our tree care experts assess everything from the roots up through the trunk to the canopy, keeping your trees safe, healthy, and looking great for years to come.
Picking up a chainsaw and calling yourself a tree care company doesn’t take much effort. Real, science-backed tree care is a whole different story. It takes solid education, hands-on experience, the right equipment, and a depth of expertise that most companies just can’t match.
For homeowners and property managers in Merrifield, VA, that’s never been a concern. RTEC Treecare has been delivering award-winning tree care services in the Merrifield area for more than 30 years. We know trees, and we know the specific environmental conditions of the Mid-Atlantic region that directly affect tree health.

RTEC Treecare is based at 2828 Mary St, in the 22042 ZIP, which sits in Merrifield. When we send a crew to a Merrifield property, it is not driving in from another county. It is working the neighborhood the equipment is stored in.
For hands-on tree work that closeness pays off in the ordinary ways that matter most. A storm-damaged limb over a driveway gets a fast response. A removal that needs the crane back for a second day does not become a scheduling puzzle. And a stump we said we would grind after the removal actually gets ground when we said, because coming back is a short trip rather than a routed appointment.
Merrifield is a census-designated place rather than an incorporated town, and it has grown quickly, from about 11,000 residents in 2000 to 20,488 in the 2020 census across just 2.72 square miles. The Mosaic District anchors the modern, built-up side of it, with apartments, townhomes and shops packed onto a former industrial site, while older single-family neighborhoods fill in around it.
That split personality, dense new construction beside decades-old residential streets, shapes the kind of tree work the area actually needs.
Merrifield's established neighborhoods carry mature canopy, and the region's most common trees, beech, red maple and tulip poplar among them, grow large. A tulip poplar planted at the edge of a 1960s yard is now a very big tree standing over a much smaller house, and when a summer storm loads its long limbs the failures land on roofs, fences and cars. Storm and limb risk is a large share of what we handle here, and the honest fix is usually structural pruning and deadwood removal before the weather makes the decision, not after.
The construction side brings a different problem. Merrifield sees constant infill and renovation, and trees do not survive it by accident. Grading, trenching and equipment parked over a root zone will kill a tree that looked perfectly healthy, and the decline shows up a year or two later when nobody connects it to the project. Where a homeowner wants to keep a tree through a build, the root zone has to be protected before the machines arrive.
Then there is access. On the tighter Merrifield lots and townhome streets, a removal is rarely a matter of dropping a tree in open space. It means rigging the tree down in pieces, or setting a crane in the street and lifting sections out over the house, with the drop zone and the neighbors worked out in advance. That is slower and more skilled than a wide-open fell, and it is the norm rather than the exception in this part of Fairfax County.
One thing worth clearing up: no county crew is coming to do any of this. Fairfax County does not maintain, inspect or remove trees on private property, so the trees on a Merrifield lot are the owner's to manage.
We work Merrifield knowing our name is on jobs a few blocks from the office. In a community this compact, where the trucks are a familiar sight, a careless removal or a rutted lawn is something the street remembers. We would rather be the company the neighborhood already knows for work that held up.
