Expert Root Collar Excavation Services in the DC Metropolitan Area

Trees need a number of things to thrive, and a healthy root system is likely at the top of the list. But unfortunately, many urban and suburban trees were planted incorrectly or forced to cope with dense, compacted soil. Some even develop girdling roots that literally strangle the life out of the tree over time.

Fortunately, there is a way to help correct many soil and root system problems. Called a root collar excavation, this technique involves the gentle removal of soil around the tree’s base using high-pressure air. This allows our arborists to assess the condition of the root system and make any corrections needed.

Root Collar Excavation Service Professional Arborist RTEC Treecare

RTEC Treecare: DC’s Root Collar Excavation Experts

Root collar excavation can be very effective at restoring a tree’s health and vigor and setting it up for long-term success. However, it isn’t a service that standard “Chuck-in-a-truck” tree-care companies are equipped or qualified to provide. It requires considerable expertise and sound judgment to avoid causing permanent harm to the tree.

The ISA-certified arborists at RTEC Treecare have extensive experience with this technique, and we’ve helped homeowners, property managers, and municipalities across the entire DC Metropolitan area ensure their trees have healthy, vigorous root systems.

Contact us today so your trees can begin enjoying all of the benefits root collar excavation provides.

Tree Care Services Available in the DC Metropolitan Area

While most root collar excavation projects involve the removal of soil, mulch, or grass, different trees require different specific services to ensure their root system health. Our technicians will always provide the guidance you need and recommend the best steps to take, but a few of the most common root collar excavation services we offer are detailed below.

One of the most common reasons to have root collar excavation performed, flare exposure helps to prevent rot, discourage the development of adventitious roots, and support tree stability. This is most commonly needed for trees that are planted too deeply.

Root collar excavation allows our team to visualize and inspect a tree’s root system, which will sometimes yield clues about problems occurring higher in the tree. For example, below-ground root issues often lead to canopy thinning and dieback.

After removing the upper layers of soil around the root system, our arborists can carefully cut and remove any girdling roots present. When performed early enough, this can help restore water and nutrient flow through the tree and prevent long-term damage.

In some cases, tree roots can be carefully pruned to prevent them from causing conflicts with hardscapes, landscaping features, or your home’s foundation. These problems can occur with many tree species, but they’re most common in shallow-rooted trees.

Signs You May Need Root Collar Excavation Services in DC Metropolitan Area

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Root Collar Excavation in The DC Metropolitan Area: FAQ

Relatively few homeowners or property managers are familiar with root collar excavation, which means that questions about the service are very common. Here are a few of the most common questions our clients have.

Root collar excavation (also called root crown excavation) is the process of carefully removing excess soil, mulch, or debris from around the base of a tree to expose the root flare — the place where the trunk transitions into the root system.

Once the surface layers have been removed, the root system can be visually inspected, corrections can often be made, and a proper grade level can be established.

Common signs that should prompt you to consider root collar excavation include a “telephone-pole appearance” at the base of a tree, bark that looks sunken or discolored near the soil line, early leaf drop, thinning canopy, or mushroom growth near the base.

Because we use a high-pressure air tool called an air spade to break up compacted soil, our root collar excavation approach is far safer than digging with hand tools or machinery, which risks mechanical damage to the root system.

The depths to which we’ll remove soil vary from tree to tree and site to site, but it's common to find root collars buried anywhere from 2 to 12 or more inches deep. We remove only what's necessary to expose the natural root flare and carry out any needed corrective actions.

Yes. Once the root collar is exposed, we can assess your tree for girdling roots. If any are found, we can typically sever them during the same visit.

Root collar excavation for residential trees generally takes one to three hours, but there are some cases in which the process takes a bit longer.

Once is usually enough if the root flare is properly maintained afterward, meaning that mulch isn’t placed over the flare again and that no additional soil grading takes place near the base. We'll give you specific aftercare guidance so the results last for the life of the tree.
