RTEC Treecare: The Leading Tree-Care Team in Arlington, VA

Grabbing a couple of chainsaws and calling it a tree care company is easy. Real, science-backed tree care is a whole different story. It takes solid education, hands-on experience, the right equipment, and a level of expertise that most companies simply don’t have.

For homeowners and property managers in Arlington, VA, that’s never been a worry. RTEC Treecare has been delivering award-winning tree care services in the Arlington area for more than 30 years. We know trees, and we know the specific environmental conditions of the Mid-Atlantic region that directly impact tree health.

A SHORT RUN ACROSS THE LINE

RTEC Treecare works from 2828 Mary St in Merrifield, about five miles from the Ballston and Clarendon corridors and roughly a twelve-minute drive along Wilson Boulevard. Arlington sits just across the line from our home turf, well within the area we cover, which matters for storm response and for the return visits a removal or a large pruning job often needs.

Being close keeps the work moving rather than strung out across a long route.

ONE OF VIRGINIA'S DENSEST PLACES

Arlington is its own county, the smallest self-governing county in the United States by area, with about 238,643 residents across roughly 26 square miles. That makes it one of the densest jurisdictions in Virginia, a tight mix of single-family homes, rowhouses and apartments where mature trees often stand within feet of houses, property lines and the public right-of-way. Four Mile Run runs through the county, the W&OD and Mount Vernon trails cross it, and parks like Bluemont and Bon Air thread between the neighborhoods.

Density is what defines tree work here. There is rarely much room around a tree, and that changes everything about how it is pruned or removed.

LARGE TREES IN VERY TIGHT SPACES

Arlington's older neighborhoods carry sizable hardwoods that were planted when the lots felt bigger, and those trees now loom over rooflines, alleys, fences and wires. Storm and limb risk is the constant, because a heavy limb in a dense neighborhood has a target under it no matter which way it falls, and the region's thunderstorms, wet snow and occasional ice are what bring the overextended ones down. The steady work is reducing that exposure ahead of time: structural pruning to lighten and balance mature canopies, and deadwood removal over the patios, parking and walkways that sit close beneath them.

Removals are where Arlington's density is felt most. On a rowhouse block or an apartment-adjacent lot there is almost never open ground to drop a tree, so the work is done by climbing and rigging it down in small pieces, or by setting a crane in the street and lifting sections out over the house, with shared walls, alleys, overhead lines and the neighbors all planned around before the first cut. That is careful, technical work, and it is the normal condition here rather than the exception.

Two practical points for Arlington owners. First, the trees on your lot are yours to manage; the county handles its street and park trees but does not treat private property. Second, Arlington regulates more than most Virginia jurisdictions, with historic districts, stream buffers and designated heritage trees all carrying their own rules, so on some properties the first question is whether a tree can be removed at all before how. It is worth confirming that before scheduling work. And on the older, wooded lots the aging oaks show the same slow, stress-driven decline seen across Northern Virginia, driven by age, drought and past root disturbance rather than a single disease, which is oak decline rather than oak wilt, since oak wilt has no confirmed cases in the state.

HELD TO IT IN A CROWDED PLACE

On a dense Arlington block the work happens in full view of a dozen households, and a careless removal or a damaged fence is seen by everyone. We treat that visibility as the standard to meet, and we would rather be the company an Arlington block keeps calling back because the work held up.

Tree Care Service in Arlington, VA: FAQ

Still have questions about our tree-care services? We’ve rounded up a few of the most common questions our clients have and answered them below.

Janet Frank
RTEC Tree has been taking care of our front Zelkova with biostimulant treatments for several years now. We had extensive front hard and landscape construction completed around the Zelkova, and the tree came through beautifully with no shock whatsoever. They recently pruned our Zelkova, and they preserved the shape of the tree. Upon pruning, they noticed a nest of 3 baby squirrels in the crook of two of the limbs. They respected that nest and notified me that they worked around the nest. Thank you, RTEC! They also removed 4 dead or suspect limbs from an oak tree adjoining our back yard. The limbs were hanging over our fence and house. They cleaned up all the debris after carefully lowering the limbs without damage to our patio furniture and grill. They respect the existing new landscaping. RTEC has also removed diseased trees from our property over the years, including an oak tree from the Resource Protection Area (which was not on our property). They worked with Fairfax County to file all paperwork to remove the tree which posed a hazard to the surrounding homes including ours. RTEC has all the equipment to deal with any tree problem and their crews are pleasant to interact with. Ben Gotch has been our consultant and he is tuned into the homeowner. Very detail oriented and thorough. He kept us apprised of our service especially if scheduling modifications needed to be made. RTEC arrived on time and finished the jobs in an efficient manner, cleaning up all the debris. I very highly recommend RTEC for all your tree needs.
