Stop and Smell the Roses — It’s Rose Month. Celebrating National Rose Month
June marks the start of National Rose Month, a time dedicated to celebrating one of the most iconic and culturally significant flowers in the world. Roses have been admired for thousands of years — from ancient Persia and Rome to modern gardens across the country. Their beauty, fragrance, and symbolism have made them a staple in landscapes and a favorite among homeowners. As we move into the warmest part of the growing season, it’s the perfect time to give your roses the attention they need to stay healthy and blooming.
A Brief History of the Rose
Roses have been intertwined with human culture for thousands of years. These remarkable flowers were first cultivated more than 5,000 years ago, treasured by ancient civilizations for their fragrance, healing properties, and ceremonial uses. Over time, roses became powerful symbols in art, literature, and royal emblems, representing everything from love to strength.
How to Keep Your Roses Happy This Summer
Healthy roses reward you with vibrant blooms all season long. A few essentials:
- Water deeply to encourage strong root systems
- Provide full sun — at least 6 hours daily
- Improve airflow to reduce fungal issues
- Feed regularly for continuous flowering
- Monitor for pests like aphids and Japanese beetles
Why Summer Pruning Matters
Since it’s National Rose Month, it’s only right that we give our roses some extra TLC. One of the best ways to do this is through summer pruning.
Summer pruning helps:
- Encourage new flushes of blooms
- Maintain an attractive, balanced shape
- Improve airflow, reducing disease pressure
A light mid-season trim keeps your roses looking their best and prepares them for strong growth through the rest of summer.

Spring Fungal Diseases to Watch as We Head Into Summer
Plant Health Care Update
Spring’s cool, wet weather creates the perfect environment for fungal diseases — and as we move into June, many of these issues begin showing up across landscapes, gardens, and even rose beds. Staying proactive now can protect your plants through the hottest months ahead.
Why Fungus Thrives in Spring?
Moisture + mild temperatures = ideal fungal growth. When leaves stay damp and airflow is limited, spores germinate quickly and spread across foliage, stems, and even roots.
Common Fungal Diseases You Might See This Month
- Anthracnose — Causes curled, spotted leaves on dogwoods, oaks, maples, and more. Often flares after rain.
- Sooty Mold — A black film on leaves caused by pests like aphids and scale. Roses are frequent targets.
- Powdery Mildew — White, powder-like patches that stunt growth and stress plants, especially lilacs, dogwoods, and crape myrtles.
- Leaf Spot — Small dark spots that multiply and cause premature leaf drop, especially on white oaks.
- Phytophthora Root Rot — A soil-borne fungus that attacks roots when soil stays too wet for too long.
- Shot-Hole Fungus — Leaves tiny BB-sized holes in foliage and commonly affects cherries, laurels, and roses.
