What is Environmental Restoration?

Environmental restoration is any process that repairs or improves environmental conditions. With increasing awareness around environmental issues, our society is becoming more cognizant of our ecological impact and how we can restore natural resources that will continue to dwindle without our input.

What Is a Natural Resource?

A natural resource is a living or non-living element of Earth that humans often depend on. Natural resources can be either renewable or non-renewable.

Trees and plants are examples of renewable natural resources. We can reproduce them faster than non-renewable resources like iron and oil. With that said, severely damaged ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest can never be completely restored.

Types of Environmental Restoration

Reforestation

Not all forests have been damaged to the extent that the Amazon has been. Reforestation keeps ecosystems thriving by ensuring that habitats are available for animals which can further reforestation efforts by spreading seeds.

Invasive Plant Management / Vegetation Management

Invasive plant species, also known as non-native invasive species (NNIS) pose a threat to native species by competing for resources. Many of the native species which are threatened by invasive plants are crucial to local ecosystems. Most of these invasive species were introduced by humans and therefore must be managed by humans.

Wetland Restoration

Wetlands are a unique type of ecosystem that requires an equally unique approach. Unfortunately, construction and other human activities have caused erosion and other serious ecological disturbances in wetlands that agencies are now trying to mitigate.

Waterway Restoration / Stream Bed Restoration

Streams and other waterways have also suffered from human activities, causing threats to vital ecosystems and endangering critical infrastructure. Because construction activities often result in erosion and debris pileups, nearby waterways have begun to overflow, causing further erosion around key infrastructure such as highways, roads, and bridges.

Environmental Remediation

Environmental Remediation is the removal of pollutants from natural resources such as water, air, or soil. Contaminants that are often found in our natural resources can cause serious damage to an ecosystem if not mitigated.
