Signs You May Need Tree Care Services in DC Metropolitan Area

Unfortunately, tree health and safety issues aren’t always obvious. That’s actually one of the most challenging aspects of tree care that homeowners and property managers experience. So, it is important to monitor your trees carefully and contact the ISA-certified arborists at RTEC Treecare if you notice any of the following clues.

Trees that develop a lean slowly over the course of decades are often relatively stable, but any that suddenly start leaning more than usual should be considered an immediate safety hazard.

Mushrooms and conks may seem benign, but they often signal the presence of advanced fungal decay. In some cases, this can lead to large branch failure or even put the entire tree at risk of windthrow.

Trees that shed their leaves during the spring or summer may be suffering from a variety of ailments, including insect attacks, diseases, water stress, fungal infections, or soil deficiencies.

Dead branches in a tree’s canopy aren’t always associated with health problems, but because these branches will eventually fall to the ground, they do represent a serious safety hazard.

Hollows and cavities may be charming and provide habitat for wildlife, but they’re frequently associated with significant internal decay, which may compromise the tree’s stability.

Splits and large cracks are often an emergency situation, as they demonstrate that the tree’s fibers are already failing and incapable of supporting the affected section for very long.

Leaves that develop spots, blotches, or early fall color may indicate that your tree is suffering from bacterial infections, insufficient water, insect attacks, nutrient deficiencies, or fungal colonization.

Mounding soil near the base of a tree is an emergency situation, often signaling that the soil or roots have lost their structural integrity, placing the entire tree at high risk of windthrow.

Tree Care Service in The DC Metropolitan Area: FAQ

Still have questions about our tree-care services? We’ve rounded up a few of the most common questions our clients have and answered them below.

Winter is generally the most affordable time of year to have trees removed in Virginia, as local tree-service companies are usually the least busy during this time of year.

It’s important to consider a variety of factors when selecting a tree service in Virginia, including the ratings and reviews the company has earned, the amount of experience the organization has, and — most importantly — whether or not they have ISA-certified arborists on staff.

Given the number of factors that influence tree removal costs (such as the size of the tree, its location on the property, and its health condition, among other things), it’s hard to provide an average cost. However, most large trees will usually cost between $1,500 and $4,000 to remove.

Homeowners’ insurance will usually cover some or all of the costs associated with removing a tree that has already fallen on a property. However, they rarely cover the costs of removing a standing tree.

It’s difficult to say which trees are most likely to fall in Virginia, given the myriad ways in which trees differ — even within a given species. Dead and structurally compromised trees are undoubtedly the most likely to fall, but in terms of the tree species that are most likely to fall, fast-growing species, such as some pines and cottonwoods, are often at higher risk of windthrow than slower growing species, such as oaks or hickories.

Yes, unfortunately, the emerald ash borer is present in Virginia, leaving most of our local ash trees at risk.

In many cases, cabling is worth it, as it can help eliminate the need for some removals. But it is not always appropriate; you’ll simply need to discuss your specific tree with an ISA-certified arborist to know for sure.
