A STRAIGHTFORWARD RUN SOUTHEAST

RTEC Treecare works from 2828 Mary St in Merrifield, roughly ten miles from Old Town Alexandria and about twenty to twenty-five minutes by way of I-395 or Route 7. Alexandria is well inside the area we cover, close enough for fast storm response and for the return visits a removal or a large pruning job usually takes.

That matters across a city as varied as this one, where a job in dense Old Town and a job on a leafy suburban lot are very different days of work.

TWO VERY DIFFERENT ALEXANDRIAS

It helps to be precise about what "Alexandria" means, because there are two of them and they need different tree work. The independent City of Alexandria, founded in 1749 and one of Virginia's oldest cities, is a dense historic core of about 159,000 people across roughly 15 square miles, with Old Town's 18th and 19th century streets and their mature street trees. Beyond the city line, much of the surrounding Fairfax County "Alexandria" mailing area, neighborhoods like Mount Vernon and Belle Haven, is leafier and more suburban, with bigger yard trees and more room around them. We serve both, and the physical work is not the same in each.

That contrast, tight historic core versus wooded suburb, runs through everything below.

OLD TOWN CONSTRAINTS AND SUBURBAN CANOPY

In Old Town and the denser city neighborhoods, the challenge is working large, aging trees in cramped, hardscaped conditions. Street and yard trees here contend with compacted soil, restricted root space and buildings on every side, which stresses them and complicates every job. A removal in that setting is climb-and-rig or crane work over historic structures and narrow streets, with almost no margin for error, and pruning is about keeping heavy limbs off rooflines and sidewalks. The city's tree canopy, measured around 32.5 percent, is lower than the leafy suburbs to the west and something the city is actively working to grow toward a 40 percent goal, so the mature private trees that remain carry real value and are worth preserving where they can be.

The city's street-tree mix also leans heavily on a few species, with maples making up close to a quarter of the inventory, and most of those trees are still young. That over-reliance is a caution for homeowners: planting a variety of species on private lots, and protecting the rare large legacy trees that have reached maturity, is how a neighborhood keeps a resilient canopy rather than one a single pest can level.

In the Fairfax County suburbs that share the Alexandria name, the work shifts to the familiar large-hardwood picture, mature oaks, tulip poplars and maples over 20th-century houses, where storm and limb risk drives most of the pruning and removals. Aging oaks in these neighborhoods can enter a slow, stress-driven decline, which is oak decline rather than oak wilt, since oak wilt has no confirmed cases in Virginia, and it is worth catching early. Across both settings, the region's thunderstorms, wet snow and the memory of the 2012 derecho make proactive pruning of big mature trees the sensible course.

ACCOUNTABLE IN A CITY THAT CARES ABOUT ITS TREES

Alexandria takes its trees seriously, from Old Town's historic streetscape to the wooded suburban blocks, and careless work stands out in both. We treat the mature canopy as the asset it is, and we would rather be the company a neighbor recommends than the one explaining a damaged tree or a torn-up yard.

Tree Care Service in Alexandria, VA: FAQ

Still have questions about our tree-care services? We’ve rounded up a few of the most common questions our clients have and answered them below.

Rebecca Chanin
RTEC was very easy to work with. They sent a knowledgeable arborist to our home to evaluate all the trees on the lot. We knew which trees we needed taken care of, but Ben really helped us understand the health of all the trees on our lot and he was definitely not a high-pressure sales person. (And, the arborist visit is no cost.) The crew that came to do the work was excellent. They showed up right on time and did the work methodically and safely. They were polite and cordial and seemed to work well together. Tree work is expensive but if you have a heavily-wooded lot, it's not an option to delay it. To wit, later in the day after the crew left, we had a a giant thunder storm with high winds. I wasn't worried about falling limbs even once! All-in-all a very good experience.
