Despite the nearby streams, this mosquito breeds in small containers rather than in flowing water. Fairfax County notes that a bottle cap of water is enough, and a big landscaped property simply holds more of those small pockets than a modest one does.
The stream valleys do matter for one thing worth naming honestly. The daytime biter that annoys you is not the mosquito that carries West Nile virus. That is the Culex mosquito, a different species the county traps and tests for each summer. Both can be present on a wooded, moist McLean lot, which is a reason to take the standing water seriously rather than only the itching.
McLean's other distinctive feature is what is worth protecting. Many properties here have serious ornamental and pollinator plantings, and barrier mosquito products are not selective, so a careless application harms bees along with mosquitoes.
