What a Sick Tree’s Root Zone Actually Looks Like
When a tree starts looking unhealthy, most people look up. They check the leaves for discoloration, scan the branches for dieback, or inspect the trunk
Designed for homeowners and property managers across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, the CPP is a proactive, science-based approach to landscape health that gives your trees and shrubs the ongoing attention they need to thrive year after year. Whether you’re looking for professional oversight with no treatment commitment or a comprehensive landscape health partnership, we have a plan built around your needs.
A certified arborist evaluates your landscape and recommends the CPP tier that best fits your property and goals.
We activate your plan, establish your monitoring schedule, and begin service. You receive digital reports and updates after every visit.
Your landscape is routinely monitored, inspected, and treated according to your CPP tier, with immediate notification if attention is needed.
Getting started is easy; you can set up a consultation via phone, email, or our online booking form linked below.
One of our ISA-certified arborists or environmental technicians will take the time to listen carefully to each question or concern.
Our crew will arrive at the scheduled time and carry out the work in a professional, safe, and respectful manner.
We’ll always share some recommendations for the ongoing support and care of your plants and trees.
Trees and shrubs face a wide range of threats, including invasive insects, fungal diseases, soil compaction, drought stress, pollution, and storm damage. Left unmonitored, these pressures compound quietly over time, weakening your landscape from the inside out until the damage becomes visible and expensive to address.
The research is clear: preventative plant health care is significantly more effective and more affordable than reactive treatment. Industry data suggests that proactive monitoring and care can reduce long-term tree care costs by as much as 50 percent, while a well-maintained landscape has the potential to increase property values by up to 10 percent.
The CPP is built on this philosophy. Rather than waiting for problems to surface, our ISA-certified arborists monitor your landscape on a routine basis, catching early warning signs and delivering targeted treatments before conditions deteriorate.
Given the value your landscape provides and the safety risks that unhealthy trees can present, you simply cannot afford to take chances when selecting a tree care partner. Fortunately, the RTEC Treecare team has the credentials, experience, and commitment to give you the confidence you deserve.
RTEC Treecare was the first tree company in Virginia to earn accreditation from the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). Our staff also includes multiple arborists certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), who provide oversight on every plan we deliver.
Over the course of our three-decade history, we have developed a thorough understanding of the trees, pests, diseases, and environmental conditions unique to the Mid-Atlantic region. That knowledge directly informs the way we monitor and care for landscapes enrolled in the CPP.
Our approach to plant health care is grounded in current arboricultural science. We minimize chemical use, protect soil biology, and prioritize organic and sustainable solutions wherever possible, because we believe caring for your landscape should never come at the expense of the surrounding environment.
From your initial consultation through every monitoring visit, you will always know what our team found, what steps were taken, and what we recommend next. You will never have trouble reaching us or be left without a clear explanation of your landscape’s condition.
Our goal is to serve as your trusted, long-term landscape health partner. The CPP is not a single treatment or a short-term contract; it is an ongoing relationship built around the health and longevity of your trees and shrubs.
We maintain all required licenses, carry comprehensive insurance, and approach every visit with an uncompromising commitment to safety for our crews, your family, and your property.
Trees don’t exist in a vacuum. They’re shaped by everything around them — from the soil beneath their roots to the insects visiting their fruit and flowers. That interconnected reality is exactly why choosing an environmentally responsible tree-care team matters.
That same perspective guides our work. We provide eco-friendly solutions that support long-term tree health while protecting the surrounding landscape. From organic biostimulant applications and soil-nurturing mulch to health-focused pruning techniques, our work is designed to strengthen trees naturally and responsibly.
Landscape health problems are not always obvious, and that is one of the most challenging aspects of tree care for homeowners and property managers. Enrolling in a CPP plan means you will have a certified arborist monitoring for these issues on your behalf. However, in the meantime, contact RTEC Treecare promptly if you notice any of the following warning signs.
Trees shedding leaves during the growing season may be dealing with insect pressure, fungal disease, water stress, or soil deficiencies, all of which benefit from early diagnosis.
Leaves that develop spots, blotches, or unexpected early fall color can indicate bacterial infections, nutrient deficiencies, fungal colonization, or pest damage.
Dead branches represent a safety concern regardless of whether they signal a broader health issue, as they will eventually fall and may cause damage or injury.
Fungal growth at or near the trunk often indicates internal decay within the root system or lower trunk, which can compromise structural stability even in trees that appear outwardly healthy.
Trees that develop a gradual lean over decades are often stable, but any sudden increase in lean should be treated as a potential safety hazard requiring immediate evaluation.
Visible openings in the trunk frequently signal advanced internal decay that extends well beyond what is visible from the outside.
Soil that appears raised or uneven near the base of a tree can indicate root decay or compromised soil structure and should be evaluated by a certified arborist promptly.
Uncover early warning signs of hazardous trees and failing branches, allowing for timely intervention.
Keeps your trees, plants, and property looking their best through every season.
Consistent monitoring and targeted treatments strengthen your trees against insect infestations, fungal diseases, and environmental stress throughout the year.
Thriving green spaces play a vital role in reducing stress, supporting immune health, and improving overall physical and mental well-being.
RTEC’s plant health care is grounded in current arboricultural science, minimal chemical use, and practices that protect soil biology, sustainable solutions and the surrounding environment.
Maintained landscapes can boost property values by up to 10 percent.

We have a lot of trees in a small space. RTEC was great! Easy to work with, worked quickly; cleaned up everything -- and simply took the stress out of the entire experience. Highly recommend.Posted on Google![]()

RTEC was wonderful. Andy and Ziggy came out in less than an hour and walked me through the tree removal process. They had a crew out the next morning and they quickly, efficiently, and safely removed the tree that fell onto my fence and garage. They were easy to work with and very friendly. Definitely recommend!Posted on Google![]()

Professional tree work done in a timely efficient manner. They were very respectful of my landscaping and did a great job. Go with the pros! (Not with the guys ringing doorbells after a storm)Posted on Google![]()

Jason did a great job. He walked around the property with me, pointed out items of interest, answered questions, and made helpful suggestions. He was very knowledgeable and thorough, and was very responsive to our concerns. He also did some extra work, for example, rearranging the mulch around a tree to protect it from damage. His service visit report was very helpful and informative. We're looking forward to continuing to work with Jason in the future to improve our yard.Posted on Google![]()

They have true arborists at RTEC vs. other tree companies that just want to cut your trees as much as possible to drive up the bill. I've been using RTEC for almost 10 years now and trust them entirely. I don't allow anyone to work on our giant red oak except RTEC!Posted on Google![]()

RTEC Tree Care has been our "go-to" for any tree care/arborist needs for many years now. Their personnel and quality of work are exemplary - first rate in every regard. We simply will not trust any other Tree care source. No reason to try any other company.Posted on Yelp![]()

I have a 70 year-old red oak that is being stressed by the street, neighbor driveway, and new Vienna sidewalk. To prolong it's life, I asked for several consulting estimates for crown/dead wood trimming and root feeding. Having been contacted by multiple "we're in your neighborhood" tree trimmers in the past, I knew that I didn't want to go that route again. With RTEC, I was very impressed by their front office/customer support professionalism and by their consultant-certified arborist (Ben) -- as compared to the other two arborists/tree companies that provided estimates. There was no BS. No upsell. I was provided options and given a very fair risk assessment for the tree given its age and stress. There was regular communication of the services contracted and the work crew that did the work was prompt, courteous, professional, and efficient. When they were done, everything was cleaned up. Outstanding!! RTEC is now the only tree company that I will use in the future. Worth every penny!!!!Posted on Yelp![]()

We had an excellent experience with RTEC tree care. The men arrive promptly. They were courteous. They communicated well with us and listened to what we wanted. They obviously knew what they were doing when pruning the tree. They also cleaned up our yard so that it is actually cleaner now than when they arrived. Great job!!Posted on Yelp![]()

I hired RTEC to remove a relatively large, dying tree from my backyard, and they did a great job. With tree branches near/above three different homes, they were meticulous, efficient and very professional. The crew was knowledgeable, courteous, and made extra efforts to clean up all debris not only from my backyard but also from the neighbors. Communications for the coordination and scheduling of the appointment was frequent and useful. Very satisfied and highly recommended!Posted on Yelp![]()

Top notch. Ben and his team are really great and they did the work expertly, cleaned up after, and all for a fair price. They even had a form for the neighbors to sign which is a really great idea.Posted on Angie's List![]()

RTEC arrived early and did a very professional and efficient job in removing it. I have used RETC before for other jobs over the years and I've always been very pleased. That continues this time. Ben, my arborist, and Luis, the job foreman couldn't have been more professional! The crew got the job done quickly, cleaned up my yard, my neighbor's yard, and closed my neighbor's gate. My neighbor was so impressed that she is having RTEC do some work in the near future on a silver maple in her yard.Posted on Yelp![]()

I highly recommend RTEC, they were very responsive, did a good job and took COVID good precautions. Ben took the time to explain everything to us and folks from the office always got back to me in less than an hour even in the evening. They cleaned up our patio after cutting branches and left it in better shape than before they came!Posted on Yelp![]()

I'm very pleased with RTEC. Extremely pleased. They were so professional. They took down several large trees in one day. They used a bucket truck which is much safer. They used large plastic mats in order to not damage the front lawn. Everything was fantastic. I will definitely be using them in the future and I will definitely be recommending them to others.Posted on Yelp![]()

okay. Arrived promptly. Did trim trees and feed according to plan. Never saw an arborist after the initial consultation. RTEC provides a lot of information via e-newsletter. Couldn't see substantial improvement in tree health.Posted on Yelp![]()

I emailed RTEC when a huge tree fell on my neighbor's porch and roof in the march 2 windstorm. They responded that day, inspected and estimated work to be done and removed the tree on March 5. Fantastic service. Ben Goetch was on site and did everything that was promised, as promised. Absolutely no hassle and excellent status reports by email and phone. And they billed insurance company directly. Neighbor's are blind so getting them back in their house safely as quickly as possible was a #1 priority for all involved. Couldn't be more grateful for RTEC and ben and rest of the team in office and on site. Yard was immaculate when they left. Night and day difference.Posted on Yelp![]()

We had a great experience when the wind storm knocked a neighbor's large tree into our roof, demolishing the rafters, insulation and ceiling of the master bedroom, with the resulting destruction piled on the bed and prohibiting access to the room. Arborist Peter Hart of RTEC was very responsive, and thanks to his familiarity with firms in the area, immediately lining up a crane and cherry picker to remove the tree and debris the next day. The service first contacted by our insurance could not confirm the date a crane would be available! We needed to have the tree removed ASAP so that a tarp could be affixed, preventing further damage due to rain. Highly recommend this firm in emergency situations!Posted on Angie's List![]()

We were very pleased. Ben Gotch came and gave us an estimate. They were planning to do work for our neighbors and we had a fews trees that bordered our properties. Ben handled the estimates beautifully. Even with two reschedules due to rain, the work went off well and the communication was excellent. We have used other tree services who were cheaper, but the end result with RTEC was so professional and well done.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Jim and RTEC are amazing. I've been up since 1:00 AM cleaning up debris and shattered glass but I had to stop and write a note on the professionalism of RTEC. I called at 3:30 AM to the RTEC emergency number and at 7:00 AM they were calling me they were on their way. The tree is removed. I cannot say enough kind words that RTEC exists.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Came when scheduled, did the work. A branch later fell off the tree, luckily onto our property, not the neighbor's. The RTEC arborist came and looked at the branch and said it wasn't their fault/problem, the tree had been trimmed properly, and there's no way they could have predicted or prevented this from happening. I've been happy with RTEC in the past, and believed him.Posted on Angie's List![]()

RTEC was able to do the work the same day as estimate. Big benefit as the tree was leaning against our roof and snow was predicted for next day. Ben provided the estimate and coordinated the work crew. All done in a timely and professional manner. Very happy with results.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Excellent. They arrived on time and were very helpful and knowledgeable. Did the work quickly and neatly. This is the third time they have done work on my trees and all occasions have been good experiences. They take time to explain everything and answer questions willingly.
The Canopy Protection Program is RTEC Treecare’s year-round, preventative tree and shrub care program. It combines routine arborist monitoring, early issue detection, and targeted treatments, depending on your selected plan tier, to keep your landscape healthy, safe, and beautiful throughout the year.
One-time services address problems that already exist. The CPP is designed to prevent problems from developing in the first place. Through regular monitoring and early intervention, our arborists catch issues when they are small, manageable, and far less costly to address.
That depends on your goals, the complexity of your landscape, and the level of involvement you are looking for. Our SmartCare plan suits property owners who want professional oversight without committing to treatments. The Essential, Plus, and Premier plans offer progressively higher levels of protection and arborist involvement. A free consultation is the best way to determine the right fit.
You will be notified promptly with a clear explanation of what was found, what it means, and what we recommend. Depending on your plan tier, some treatments may be included; others may be quoted separately. Plus and Premier plan members receive discounts on more intensive treatments.
Your plan will be customized by a certified arborist to cover the trees and shrubs on your property. The scope of coverage will be clearly outlined during your initial assessment.
Absolutely. We work with homeowners’ associations, property management companies, and commercial property owners throughout the DC Metro area. Contact our team to discuss a program tailored to larger or multi-property landscapes.
When a tree starts looking unhealthy, most people look up. They check the leaves for discoloration, scan the branches for dieback, or inspect the trunk
Maybe you noticed it while mowing the lawn or edging the sidewalk. A branch near the top of your favorite oak looks a little too
