Signs You May Need Tree Care Services in Arlington, VA

Tree health and safety issues aren’t always easy to spot — and that’s honestly one of the trickiest parts of tree care for homeowners and property managers. That’s why it’s important to keep a close eye on your trees and reach out to the ISA-certified arborists at RTEC Treecare if you notice any of the following signs.

A tree that's developed a gradual lean over the years is usually stable, but one that suddenly starts leaning beyond its normal angle is an immediate safety hazard that deserves prompt attention.

Mushrooms and conks are easy to overlook, but they're often a sign of serious fungal decay taking hold beneath the surface. In some cases, that decay can bring down large branches or leave the entire tree at risk of toppling in the wind.

A tree dropping leaves in spring or summer is trying to tell you something. Insect damage, disease, water stress, fungal infection, or a soil deficiency could all be the culprit — and none of those problems fix themselves over time.

Dead branches in a tree's canopy don't always signal a health problem, but they're a serious safety hazard all the same. At some point, those branches will hit the ground, and it's better not to leave that to chance.

Hollows and cavities give a tree charm and offer wildlife a place to call home, but don't let that fool you — they typically indicate serious internal decay that could be silently compromising the tree's structural integrity.

Splits and large cracks are often an emergency. They're a clear sign that the tree's fibers are already failing and may not be able to support the affected section for much longer.

Spots, blotches, or early fall color on your tree's leaves could mean it's dealing with a bacterial infection, water stress, insect damage, nutrient deficiencies, or fungal colonization.

Mounding soil near the base of a tree is an emergency. It often signals that the soil or roots have lost their structural integrity, putting the entire tree at serious risk of toppling in the wind.

That same perspective shapes everything we do. We provide eco-friendly solutions that support long-term tree health while protecting the surrounding landscape. From organic biostimulant applications and soil-nurturing mulch to health-focused pruning techniques, our work is designed to strengthen trees naturally and responsibly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Tree Care Service in Arlington, VA: FAQ

Still have questions about our tree-care services? We’ve rounded up a few of the most common questions our clients have and answered them below.

Yes — Arlington is a regular part of our service area. Whether you need routine pruning, a tree health evaluation, stump removal, or emergency storm response, our team is fully equipped to handle all aspects of professional tree care throughout the county. Visit rtectreecare.com to schedule a consultation or request a free estimate.

Stump grinding is the process of using a specialized machine to grind a tree stump down several inches below the soil surface, eliminating the visible portion and allowing the area to be filled, seeded, or replanted. Whether you need it depends on your plans for the space. Leaving a stump in place isn't necessarily harmful, but stumps can attract wood-boring insects, become a tripping hazard, and make lawn maintenance more difficult. If you plan to replant, install hardscape, or simply want a clean finished look, stump grinding is almost always worth adding to a removal project.

Tree roots follow water and nutrients — which often leads them toward irrigation lines, sewer pipes, and the moisture-retaining soil near foundations. While roots themselves rarely crack a structurally sound foundation, they can exploit existing cracks and cause them to widen over time. Sidewalks and pavement are more commonly affected, as surface roots grow beneath paving and cause it to heave and buckle. If you're noticing pavement damage or have concerns about root proximity to your home's foundation or plumbing, we can assess the situation and discuss options that address the conflict without unnecessarily removing a healthy tree.

Mulching is one of the simplest and most beneficial things a homeowner can do for their trees — but it's frequently done incorrectly. A proper mulch ring should extend two to three feet out from the base of the tree in all directions, be two to four inches deep, and — critically — should not be piled up against the trunk. Volcano mulching, where mulch is mounded directly against the bark, traps moisture against the trunk and creates conditions for rot, disease, and pest activity. Correct mulching retains soil moisture, moderates soil temperature, reduces compaction, and suppresses competing grass and weeds — all of which support healthy root development.

Removal is not always the first or only answer, and we approach it as a last resort rather than a default. We recommend removal when a tree is dead or structurally compromised beyond the point where cabling, bracing, or pruning can adequately manage the risk — or when it is so severely diseased that treatment is no longer viable and the tree poses a threat to surrounding trees or structures. When removal is genuinely necessary, we communicate that clearly and explain why. When it isn't, we'll tell you that too and outline what care options exist to extend the tree's life safely.
