Burke takes its name from Silas Burke, who put up a house on a hill above the Pohick Creek valley around 1824. The railroad turned it into Burke's Station in the 1840s, and the name shortened to Burke in 1903. Kings Park, the first large subdivision in the area, broke ground in 1960.
The thing that makes Burke different came later. Burke Centre was laid out across 1,700 acres as a Planned Residential Community, one of only three PRC districts in all of Fairfax County. Reston and Cardinal Forest are the other two. Instead of gridding the land and clearing it, the plan clustered roughly 5,862 homes into five named clusters and left woodland, ponds and more than 30 miles of pathway threaded between them.
So Burke homeowners don't just have trees in their yards. They live directly against woodland that belongs to somebody else.
The water here is engineered too. Six flood control impoundments went into the Pohick Creek watershed between 1970 and 1985, and Burke Lake Park's 888 acres and 218 acre lake sit on ground the federal government bought in the 1950s for an international airport before Dulles won the argument. The stream valleys that thread between the neighborhoods were built as infrastructure, and the woods along them grew in around it.
That boundary is where most of our Burke work happens, and it's where most of the confusion is too.

Where a house or a pathway opened the canopy next to them, those trees are now standing partly exposed and carrying loads they never grew for.
