Soil composition is an important part of managing a tree’s nutrients, but it’s commonly overlooked by homeowners. Soil is a complex eco-system made up of minerals, organic matter, water, and air. Typically in environments undisturbed by humans, such as the forest, the soil naturally keeps itself in balance which is considered good soil composition. However, in urban and suburban areas like ours, it’s common to find out of balance soil, also known as poor soil composition. When these levels get out of balance they can stop the tree from absorbing the nutrients it needs to survive.

Solutions To Poor Soil Compaction:
De-compaction: In the past, we’ve talked about soil compaction smothering the roots of a tree, but soil compaction can also lead to poor soil composition. By de-compacting the critical root zone, more pore space is created which allows nutrients, micro-organisms, and other beneficial properties to re-populate the soil.
Vertical Mulching: This process is similar to de-compaction but goes one step further. Vertical mulching uses the same high-velocity air tool, as de-compaction does, but the technician creates holes every 2 to 3 inches in the critical root zone. These holes are then filled with organic matter which permeates the soil and improves the overall soil composition.
Bio-Stimulants: Bio-Stimulants contain a natural blend of sugars, bacteria, humic acid, sea kelp extract and fungi that feed the soil and naturally fertilize the tree. By introducing this blend to the critical root zone it will re-establish good soil composition and act as a multi-vitamin for your tree.
